Newport Beach Itinerary
Local Tastemaker & Nobleman Founder

Personal picks by Doug McLaughlin

Doug McLaughlin is a California native with a deep-rooted connection to the state’s most iconic coastal lifestyle.
Born in Palm Springs and raised in Paso Robles, he later moved to Irvine for college, where he began shaping his career in luxury branding and media. It was nearby Newport Beach, however, that left a lasting impression. Over the years, Doug has lived throughout its most coveted enclaves, from the Peninsula to Crystal Cove and Dover Shores, embracing the coastal rhythm that continues to influence both his personal life and creative vision.
A lifelong athlete, Doug spends his free time boating along the coast, spearfishing, and staying active through tennis, golf, and weekly soccer matches. That balance of competition, adventure, and lifestyle is central to his philosophy and the brand he has built.

Doug McLaughlin is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of NOBLEMAN, a modern luxury publication defined by a clear and purposeful point of view. Inspired by the idea of restoring the art of being a gentleman, he set out to spotlight men of integrity, character, and ambition, while showcasing the very best in travel, design, style, and culture. With more than two decades of experience in luxury branding and publishing, Doug has established NOBLEMAN as a distinctive voice with both national reach and a strong Southern California identity.
Four years ago, Doug expanded the brand beyond print by creating its signature live experience, NOBLE Wine & Dine. Designed to be one of California’s most elevated culinary events, it brings together exceptional chefs, world-class wines, and a curated audience, all centered around connection and purpose. Now in its fourth year, the event continues to grow in both scale and impact, while supporting meaningful charitable initiatives.
Above all, Doug’s greatest priority is his family. Together with his wife Lydia and their three sons, he continues to pursue a life defined by experience, intention, and a commitment to living well.
Do you have a morning ritual that sets you up for the day ahead?

Doug:
A great cup of coffee is non-negotiable. I’m a barista at heart, and not just any coffee, always a flat white. There’s something satisfying about getting the latte art just right.
With coffee in hand, I spend time in the Bible and in prayer. My faith in Jesus is the foundation for everything. It centers me, but more importantly, it guides how I lead, how I build, and how I raise my boys.
What is one of your favorite recent Newport Beach discoveries?

Doug:
On the watch side, it was big news when The 1916 Company at Fashion Island launched their certified pre-owned Rolex program. Being able to walk in, find something special, and walk out with it the same day is a game changer. No waitlists.
For dining, CasaDami really impressed me. Great food, strong wine list, and it feels like a true European experience with the shareable, tapa style approach. The empanadas are outstanding.

It’s just you and Lydia out on the town. What does an ideal date night look like?

Doug:
We make date night a weekly ritual. It’s how we stay connected with everything going on between work and the kids’ schedules.
Lydia is Italian, so we’ve always bonded over great food. Nobu is our go to. John and his team run an incredible operation, and it’s consistently excellent. We always order the Japanese snapper Matsuhisa style. Another favorite is Café R+D, usually for lunch. Deviled eggs, burger, French dip. Simple, done right, and always hits.
You’re known for your refined sartorial style. How would you describe your approach to style and where do you shop to achieve it?
Doug:
I lean classic and timeless. I don’t chase trends, and I’m not interested in loud logos or overdesigned pieces.
I appreciate Italian craftsmanship. Eleventy has been a favorite for the past decade. Great fit, high quality, very wearable. Their travel jacket in cashmere is a perfect example, polished enough for business, relaxed enough for everyday, and incredibly comfortable.
For suits, everything I wear is custom by Mark Pomerantz. Once you’ve had a suit made by Mark, it’s hard to go anywhere else. The fit, the detail, the process, it’s on another level.
What is your approach to gift giving and where do you find the perfect item?
Doug:
I like giving something for the home, especially the bar or kitchen. Something elevated that people wouldn’t necessarily buy for themselves.
A set of Baccarat cocktail glasses is a go to. Alchemy Works at Lido always has great options. Another favorite is sunglasses from Leisure Society. Incredible quality, built to last, assuming you don’t lose them.

You’re feeling sporty, what do you enjoy outdoors?
Doug:
I try to get outside every day. I play tennis four to five times a week, hike Crystal Cove with Lydia, and play in a men’s soccer league.
The boys have gotten into surfing, so that’s been fun to do together. I also love paddle-boarding around Newport Harbor. Great workout, clears your head.
I’ve tried e-foiling a few times and I’m hooked. It’s smooth, quiet, and honestly feels like you’re flying.
Friends are coming in from out of town for the weekend. What are your must visit spots?

Doug:
First thing, we get on the water. Rent an electric boat, bring wine, a cheese board, and just cruise the harbor. We’ll dock for lunch or dinner at places like The Cannery, Nobu, or SOL, then back out on the water.
For brunch, Zinc Café in Corona del Mar is always a hit, and the farmers market across the street makes for a great stroll after.
Where do you find a balance of style and substance in Newport Beach?

Doug:
Newport really strikes that balance. You have luxury, natural beauty, and a strong sense of family all in one place. It can feel like a laid-back beach town, but there’s also a real appreciation for style.
People here care about how they show up, whether it’s fashion or cars, and there’s space to enjoy both. What makes it special, though, is the community. It’s friendly, grounded, and genuinely welcoming. And from a culinary standpoint, the level of restaurants and talent continues to rise, which makes it an exciting place to be.
